Icon Follies

Hopefully someone who is a bit more computer savvy than I am can help me answer this. I can't seem to figure out why icons that I've saved to my computer for later use only seem to save as Bitmap images. I'm thinking I may have incorrect settings on my computer. (Especially since the images in question are originally GIF's or JPEG's -- since LJ will only allow GIF, JPEG, and PNG uploads.) I've even tried saving a few of the icons I already have uploaded (which I know for a fact are the proper file type or they wouldn't be there) and the same thing happens -- they will only save to my hard drive as Bitmap.

It's frustrating because I have to go through the process of saving them to a disk and bringing them down to my other computer just to convert the file. Not only that, but saving animated icons is out of the question since Bitmap only captures one frozen image of the animated series.

I probably did something to my computer without knowing it, since I was able to save the correct file types just fine before. If anyone knows how to fix this, I'd sure appreciate it!

(I have Windows XP, if that makes any difference.)
