Earned, Never Given
Oct. 5th, 2004 07:37 pmWell, my students in the National Honor Society are officially linked to the United Way now, and will be required to participate in a minimum of two related volunteer activities this year. (And that's above and beyond all the mandatory service hours that must be met as a school requirement.) I'm sure I'll get a lot of complaints tomorrow at our first meeting due to all the extra volunteerism they're going to have to do, but seriously. You're the Honor Society, people. Service and leadership are a big part of it. And I'm really just tired of students (Seniors especially) putting their membership down on resumes and college applications when they haven't done a single thing for the organization. It's not all about the grades, kids -- you could be a straight-A student and not deserve to be a member of the NHS. It's prestigious and you earn it; it's not something owed to you just because you can swing a 4.0.
(And if you're going to just whine about it, let's not forget that good character is a requirement of the society as well.)
Done venting now.
