Movie Fest

Lately, it's been a rare thing for me to see more than one movie during a 24 hour period, but between today and yesterday, I've been on a flick-watchin' binge. Don't get me wrong, I love movies. I love watching them. I love going to them. I just rarely have the time. This weekend, however, between not really having any evening plans (due to the lovely 3 hours or so of sleep I was able to get at the Senior retreat) and trying to help my mom out this afternoon, I actually had the time to indulge.

"Man on Fire" was last night's rental. It was okay, though not as good as I'd expected. The amount of Spanish spoken in the film amused me (especially since I knew there were quite a few more expletives actually said than what was subtitled on screen *g*). And, yes, I know the whole "Hermandad" thing was supposed to be menacing, but I found the wording of the scene where it is mentioned to be a bit on the funny side. The part where it's said (and I'm not quoting exactly), "They're like a brotherhood; they call themselves "La Hermandad" would be like saying, in English, "They're like a brotherhood; they call themselves "The Brotherhood!" (Cue the ominous music! Dun-dun-duuuun!) It would be a line fit for an Austin Powers flick! At the end, I felt... )

This afternoon, to try and prevent my mother from injuring her leg further (She insists on doing laundry and housework when she should be sitting down!), I offered to take her to see "The Forgotten." Not bad. Pretty much what I expected, though it certainly did have its startling moments. Mom loved it, so that was good.

Best part of going to the movie, though? The trailers, of course! "Edge of Reason," the Bridget Jones sequel, looks very, very funny! (I love Renée Zellweger! And any actress who isn't afraid to look like a real woman!) I also like the look of "Spanglish" with Adam Sandler.

Yay for finally having time to see movies!

I went to Borders this evening with every intention of purchasing [livejournal.com profile] jimbutcher's new novel, "Furies of Calderon." I talked myself out of it after arriving, but with good reason. It's Educator Appreciation Weekend next week and that means I'll get a 25% discount on everything I buy. So I reluctantly decided to wait. But it is a $24 book, and the discount will certainly be appreciated.

To assuage my patience, I decided to indulge in a recommendation from the lovely [livejournal.com profile] evil_overlord (whose birthday I sadly neglected to mention last month. A very happy belated, Hon!), by picking up a copy of Hamilton's "Guilty Pleasures." I look forward to devouring it while waiting to pick up Butcher's latest.

Of course, the very pretty man behind the counter pretty much validated my decision to make a purchase. Friendly too. As I approached the counter, he commented on my shoes, although how he could see them from where he was I have no idea. He must have really been looking. (Ahem - *squee*) Too bad I'm a bonehead. The conversation went a little something like this:

PRETTY MAN: Are those those new Diesels?
RUMMI: Excuse me?
PM: Your shoes. They don't sell them around here, do they? (Now, how he knew what brand they were was beyond me. They don't have any really distinguishing markings that I can see, and the label is on the inside. To me, they're just a cute pair of sneakers. Should I worry that he knows more about shoes than me?)
R: I don't know, actually. I bought them in St. Louis. (Constant mental note: Smile pretty, smile pretty, smile...)
PM: I know they have them in places like Philly, but I didn't think they made it up here yet. ("Here" being about 2 hours north of Philly.)
(At this point, I try to say something clever and charming about how I'm at the very pinnacle of fashion, but I think it came out a little more like this:)

To prove that I wasn't a complete moron and did have some brains in my noggin, I asked when the Educator's weekend was, although I already knew. (Read: Hey, I'm a teacher! That shows I can't be all dumb with the talking and the soshul skilz.) He smiled and handed me a flier. So I'll be trying again next week. (Course, with my luck he's either gay, or an age such that he could have been a student at one point - just young enough to squick me.) Ah, well.

(In conclusion, my new icon, made by [livejournal.com profile] vampkiss, was absolutely kismet and perfect for this post, since it honors the wonders that are reading and very pretty men. Yay! *drool*)
