sharelle: (More than Friends)
[personal profile] sharelle
-- I thought I'd start with the link to avoid, since it's pretty important . . . which is also why I'm not placing it behind a cut.

A site called "Frienditto.Com" has recently been brought to my attention and, while many members of my flist already know about it (since that was where I'd first heard of it), I wanted to help spread the word to those who don't. Frienditto (which also has an LJ account at [livejournal.com profile] frienditto) plugs itself innocently enough as being an "archiving" site – a place for LJ users to keep track of posts. What it actually does, however, is allow its users to publicly archive any posts that they have access to. This includes entries that have been locked or kept otherwise private by those on your flist. If, for example, you posted an entry that included personal information, which you wished to disclose only to certain readers or friends, and someone on your flist had sent the necessary information to Frienditto, your private post would be automatically uploaded to Frienditto's public forum.

The site's views on what constitutes "privacy" is a little warped and shady, too. Here's an excerpt from their FAQ's:

When I archive a journal entry does frienditto strip out any information within the page's source that could identify the archiver? How?
We have gone to great lengths to make sure that any posts that are archived are as anonymous as possible. This includes when you archive a friends only post. The scripts that are used eliminate all information that could possibly identify the archiver.

So, in other words, "We'll help you publicize your friends' private posts, then we'll be happy to cover your ass!" See? Shady. It's a service that touts privacy . . . and then hacks into private journal entries. (*cough*can-we-say-hypocrites?*cough*) Also, in order to use their "service" you must provide the site with certain information. This includes your own LJ password so they can use it to access the private entries on your flist. (Read: NEVER GIVE YOUR PASSWORD TO ANYONE!!)

The argument has been made that any LJ entry, since it is posted in what is essentially a public forum, is therefore open to the public. But, honestly, the locking option is there for a reason – so you can have the choice of revealing (or not) whatever you choose. At its heart, LJ is just that -- a journal. If you were to leave your diary in plain sight on the bed, it doesn't mean that anyone can (or should) break open the lock and read it.

Please respect the privacy of those you call Friends here on LJ. And if you really wish to archive and keep track of outstanding entries made by those on your flist, that's what the "Memories" feature is for.

-- On a much lighter note, here's a bit of pimping, and a site you should definitely visit now! [livejournal.com profile] deathisyourart and [livejournal.com profile] blond_bear, who moderate the [livejournal.com profile] watchersdiaries community, are now hosting an Art-A-Thon. The details are all provided through the link, but it looks extremely awesome! (Like a ficathon, but with participants creating fanart for the stories they read.) Sign-ups for artists are through March 23, while writers can submit their stories over the following week. Go! Sign up now!

-- I realized that I'm a terrible person when I couldn't stop laughing at this last link. (Seriously, constant flow of tears that just. wouldn't. stop.) I may be turning into the type who seeks out bad!fic, just to be able to mock it. God, what kind of teacher am I? *facepalms*

If you like your bad!(and I mean supremely bad)!fic guilty pleasure, check this one out: Shimmering Willow (Parts 1 & 2)

Between said "Shimmering Willow," the existential bonding between Werewolf!Oz and Angel and the appearance of "Smash Buffy," there are far too many priceless bad!lines in this one. But here's a taste of the military recruitment nightmare of some character named "Zander:"

Zander:"senate passes bill for draft"!
Zander: NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Zanders mum: "Zander u got a letter from the goverment".
Zander: "WHAT"! "GIVE IT HERE MOM"!
Zanders mum: "alright".
(she hands him the letter)
(he rips open the letter}
(zander can feel the face of disgust on his own face)

DEAR ZANDER HARRIS
WE ARE PEASED TO INFORM U THAT U HAVE BEEN DRAFTED IN TO THE ARMY IF U DONOT JOIN US AND SERVE THE COUNTRY U WILL BE JAILED AND BAIL SET FOR 5,000000 DOLLARS IM SENDING SOME PEOPLE OVER THERE TO GET U .

uncle SAM

Zander: "IVE BEEN DRAFTED DAM IT"!
(JUST THEN TWO ARMY GUYS COME RUSHING IN)

blonde haired army dude : ZANDER HARRIS U ARE COMING WITH US OR ELSE!
ZANDER: "or else what"?
"jail". the officer replied
{they rush Zander out of his house in into a jeep}
Zanders dad: well the kid's gone i smell a vaction".
Zanders mom: "yeah hawaii her we come."

(they leave the house and lock it up and drive in their car to the air port and get on a plane}

Yeah . . . when my brother joined the Marines, that's exactly how it happened.
