Overall, I found the Oscars to be relatively unspectacular. I didn't really find much of it surprising, aside from Million Dollar Baby winning the Best Picture award. But even that wasn't a huge shock. I was happy to see Jamie Foxx win for Ray, even though I was rooting for either Johnny Depp or Don Cheadle.
The one thing, however, that I found supremely annoying about the ceremony was every. flipping. time. Beyoncé took the stage to perform a song that had absolutely nothing to do with her. I mean, she's a beautiful girl and she has a nice voice, but are we honestly that in love with Beyoncé that her solos need to supersede performances by people who were actually involved in the nominated films?
Really.
"Learn to be Lonely" was performed by Minnie Driver for Phantom, who, if I'm not mistaken, was in attendance at the Oscars. And if she wasn't, then Emmy Rossum definitely was, and she at least had something to do with the film. As far as the song "Believe" goes, Josh Groban was right there! Why did the song suddenly need to be converted to a duet just so Beyoncé could join in? (If anything, I thought her "harmonies" detracted from the quality of the song.) If they wanted her to be featured, then just give her one. (Her performance of the piece from The Chorus was fine . . . sort of.) And if they really wanted her featured so much, they should have had her do all of the songs; then there would have at least been some uniformity to the whole thing. The sporadic Beyoncé Show was just too haphazard and, in my opinion, totally unnecessary.
