BSG Finale

Okay, I so knew it was Starbuck that Lee broke formation to follow. I completely expected a last-moment cameo from Kara because her "death?" Too many loose ends there. I hadn't exactly thought she'd be rejoining the fleet right away, but I assumed that she'd appear briefly in the finale, although I did imagine we'd see her finding Earth. (Funny how, in just that brief scene, she seems more like the Starbuck of old - less angsty and damaged.)

Four of the Final Five - This is where I'm less inclined to take the information with which we were presented at face value. It seems strange to have four characters who have been *such* major players for the human side of things (not just of the resistance, but of the entire arc of the series so far) suddenly turn out to not be human after all. (The fact that it was clearly the Chief's voice saying, "We're Cylons" on the previews leaves me doubtful -- especially since previews tend to be deliberately misleading.) But this was where I went wrong last season: I was fairly convinced that the entire New Caprica segment at the end was a dream sequence. So obviously, I'm not the best judge of what's real on this show and what's not.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that we are meant to take the information as given - Tyrol, Anders, Tigh, and Tory are four of the Final Five. It raises some interesting questions and/or possible places to go from here:

- Which of the Five did D'Anna speak with/apologize to in her vision? (Tigh, maybe?)

- Is Starbuck meant to be the fifth? (Although I'm glad she's back, I'm not much of a fan of this idea.)

- Or could Badger Romo Lampkin be one? He suddenly didn't need his cane once the trial was over. (Although that could have just been a strategic move to win sympathy points for his side.)

- We don't know much about the Final Five, other than the known Cylons' reluctance to speak of them. Are they seen as "defective" by the other Cylons because they seem to be outside (above?) the collective consciousness? (I've always likened the Cylons the the Borg in that way.) Although Cylons, unlike their Star Trek equivalent, display a tendency toward free will, they seem to have been hinting that something about the Final Five goes above and beyond -- especially now that these particular individuals have been "identified" as Cylon. (Even though I'm still not completely convinced.)

- So is Tyrol's and Cally's baby another Cylon/Human hybrid? If so, what's so special about Hera now?

- Triggered by a Bob Dylan song? From Earth, no less? (Although the latter detail may not be significant in the grand scheme of the show's universe.) I did like the new version of "Watchtower" that played at the end, though.

- What about Roslin "sensing" the fleet's shutdown before it happened?

And we must wait until 2008 for the answers. But at least there is a Season 4 to look forward to! :)

The time between seasons gives the writers time to figure out WTF is going on.

It gives waffley fans like me time to view the episodes we missed and to re-watch the ones we've seen.

And to read and write The Fic... :-)

It's funny how I always imagine them planning out every detail from the beginning when, in actuality, they are making evil little plot twists in the writers' room up until the very last minute. :)
