Ruin my weekend, why don't you?
Apr. 22nd, 2005 11:57 pmEvery once in a while you get that student who is so stubborn that she'll turn what should have been a little thing into a huge fiasco. I was "babysitting" the calculus class for my co-worker across the hall who had to leave for a family emergency. (Probably my own fault from the beginning -- I actually volunteered to help her out. And my vice principal had told me earlier that since I had already subbed for someone today I could leave early. In retrospect, I should have just done that. I would have felt guilty about it, however, since the other teacher's need to leave was greater than mine.)
Anyway, I was "babysitting," which I say because that was what if felt like. I spent the first hour of the period watching one girl sleep while the rest of the class worked on the assignment which had been left for them. With 30 minutes left, I decided enough was enough, and proceeded to wake the girl up. I asked her to do her work and what followed pretty much consisted of a whirlwind of attitude, culminating in one of those "I don't have to do what you say because you're not my usual teacher anyway" lines.
Oh, honey. Did you mess with the wrong chica. I may not be your teacher this semester, but I have taught you for three years. So if you think I don't know you (or your parents, I might add) and if you assume that you're out of my disciplinary jurisdiction, you've got another thing coming.
She proceeded to make matters worse for herself when the school's dean of students asked her about the incident and she gave him some of the same attitude.
Did I mention that this girl is a 17-year-old senior? (God, the childishness of some people.)
Needless to say, it left me in a sour mood for a good bit of the afternoon. I mean, I'm glad it's Friday, but part of me doesn't want to wait until Monday to finish resolving this matter.
*sigh*
