Mason's screw-up: I think it was that the woman got shot before he took her soul. He did get it before she died, but I remember in the pilot ep Rube saying that in violent deaths they take the soul just before it... 'in civilized society we take her soul at the corner, we don't wait for the piano to fall on her.' So if Mason hadn't been hanging out with the Goth chick, the soul wouldn't have experienced getting shot and the related pain.
