30 Days of Fanfic - Day 27

27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

I have a laptop in my bedroom, and I do most of my writing sitting, propped up, on my bed. I've written both on the computer and by hand, though I find writing on the computer to be easier when I'm doing fic.

Interestingly enough, when I'm writing anything else - lesson plans, reports, essays, research papers, my graduate thesis - I must write it by hand first! And for those, I can not be sitting on my bed, either. I must be at a table or a desk. (Funny how my creative work and my academic work are so strictly separated like that!)

Master List of Questions can be found here.

That is odd - interesting how you need to write by hand for academic but not fic.

I know: it is odd, even to me. I'm not even sure I can explain it. I genuinely need to write anything academic out by hand; I can't think at the keyboard in those situations. At all. Whereas with fic, I can write or type, but, given the choice, I prefer to be at a computer. I guess I just use completely different parts of my brain for each kind of writing.

That's really fascinating, the idea that you view the types of writing so differently that you need completely different settings for each one!

It sounds kind of like your brain separates "work" writing from "play" writing - one's done in a more professional setting (a desk) and the other's more relaxed and casual (in bed). It also probably has to do with structure, where you get the facts from, how much original creation each one involves . . .

. . . Blah, I'm sorry! :P I'll stop being psychoanalyzing and creepy now!

Hee! Analyze away! I've wondered about it myself, but always figured it just is what it is. (One extra little interesting bit: when I write my actual lessons for school, I usually do it sitting on the floor of my workspace, rather than at the desk. If I need to write something longer - like a test - I'll move to the desk.)
