I have to keep that in mind when I'm writing too. (While I enjoyed the more tempered/teasing relationship between Angel and Spike later in the season, they've got a long way to go to reach that point from here.)
As for the edginess, that was only a semi-conscious decision. I didn't want weepy!souled!Spike because I think he's gotten past all that. (Though there may be some minor relapses when Buffy enters the picture more fully.) I was afraid of him becoming too perfect - the deus ex machina with all the answers since he knows things the other S2 characters don't. Spike was always impulsive, and a big mistake-maker at times. That, and the edginess, may balance out the prior knowledge he has of things to come. (And cause more lovely trouble! *G*)
