Canoes! Canoes! Canoes!

Riverfest time!

And we did so much better than last year! However, I’m just as sore. Nice, though, that it’s not from being dragged under the canoe this time and more from paddling-related jelly-arms. I wish I could say the same for everyone.

One teenaged girl in front of us toppled her kayak and we nearly hit her. (I kind of thought she’d be in trouble when she got into her boat on the shore and then asked how she was supposed to get it to the water.) I saw her at the finish line later and I really hope she finished. It had to be hard and discouraging, especially since she was alone, so I hope she got back in and kept going. It's easly to give up after something like that. I know I wanted to after our big spill last year. Along other parts of the river, boats were scattered like a nautical graveyard. One canoe was completely submerged with water flowing over the top. The canoe-rental place is going to have its hands full!

Gene and Will started at the 12-mile mark instead of with us at the 8 (read: more rapids!), and fell in four times. Plus their boat had a leak. (Gene’s a bit heavier than Will, so he, in combination with all the water flooding their boat, kept lifting the front end up.) They made pretty good time, considering. But, god, were they soaked! And freezing! And Gene lost his favorite hat.

Nick and I managed to hold on to our camera this time, so we’ll have photographic evidence of our trip. Didn’t fall in this year, so we already did 100% better than last year. There’s a chance we may have placed too, though, so we’ll have to check the results when they’re posted! And to top it all off, some of my students showed to see us off. Love them sometimes!
