...of the Angel series finale. Good. But flawed.

In general, I felt awfully rushed throughout - like there was so much that needed to happen, but not nearly enough time to fit it all in. I'll say the same thing that I said following the BtVS finale: 2. Hour. Episode.
Series finales really should be twice as long if the writing/production team wants to include that many details. (Especially to give closure to fans who, let's face it, need it. Most especially at the end of the line.)

A few random observances:

Let's go to work. )

Parts of it were as I expected. Parts were better. And parts were worse. )

There’s lots more, but I’m at work and have neither access to the episode, nor the time to get into the minute details. I’ll probably be making the LJ rounds to supply random commentary, though.

Ciao!

I've been looking forward to tonight's Angel for a while, but now that it's going to be on in a few hours I'm finding that I'm less and less eager to see it.

I'm trying to remain unspoiled through the end of the season (a feat I wasn't able to accomplish with BtVS, but often wished I did). However, I can't shake this sinking feeling that tonight's installment is going to be a major letdown. For weeks, Joss has been hinting that this is the episode where the members of the B/S/A triangle come to "an understanding." I just cringe to think of what that might be (especially since SMG's role is being played by a body-double which, if the trailer is any indication, we only see from behind). It's not so much that I'm worried they're going to go the Angel route - personally, I see nothing adult about that relationship - but there are so many fans who fall on either side of the fence when it comes to "who-should-end-up-with-whom", I'm concerned that the writers are going to try to please everybody by doing something lame. I have visions of "Oh, Buffy's with an nice Italian boy now, so neither of us want to intrude on her happy, normal life." That's cliché, it's overdone on this series, and it's totally against the character of at least one of them. (As much as I like Spike, this has been my major problem with his character on Angel this season - it almost seems as though many of his past experiences, developments and feelings are being disregarded on a regular basis.)

Then again, I may be ranting over nothing. I really hope I am proven wrong tonight. I really, really do. I need a satisfyingly realistic resolution.

So I finally got a chance to watch the Angel episode from Wednesday. (I wasn't going to tape it. Based on the preview, it had looked like one that would be okay to miss.)

Sooo glad I didn't! (Miss it, that is.) Puppet!Angel was the cutest thing ever! Overall, the episode was a riot and though Nan Dibble reviews it with far more insight than I could, (probably because I was too busy giggling at the cute parts to be insightful), here were a few things that stuck with me:

Ranges from super-cute muppet moments to full-frontal nudity. )

An over-the-top funny episode was just what the fans needed, in light of Angel's all-too-abrupt and unforeseen cancellation. It was also just what the show needed, since the next few eps look like they're gonna be pretty bleak. (Although the scene from next week's preview with Spike and Angel all hand-holdin' had me giggling with the warm fuzzies. *G* Not fan-of-slash like, just my soft spot for former-enemies-working-together.)

Felt like ranting, but also felt too scatterbrained to go into vivid detail. Hopefully my random babbling (with the occasional grunts and noises) will convey my feelings efficiently.

-- Mock Trial - (Aaarrgghh) I hate when my girls are shafted when they so deserve to win! Okay, I'm biased toward my team, I admit that, but I just don't understand what goes on in some people's (*coughboneheadjudgescough*) heads. If a student attorney has her entire presentation memorized and down pat, but delivers it slightly on the quiet side, should she receive less points than her opponent who, though nice and ultra-loud, also constantly forgets his place and has to sift through his notes three times before he finds it again? Honestly. Or how about the opposing council whose opening remarks exceed the time limit, supposedly resulting in a mandatory penalty, and who still gets top marks? (*grumble*) I'm a bit drained from being the "bigger person" and telling the girls how good they were, trying to keep them from getting frustrated, when all I want to do is pounce on those clueless jury members and vent my own frustration. (Grrr!)
I'll be getting the finalized scores and placement tomorrow. (*sigh*) For as much as I enjoy this team, sometimes this is the worst part, because I have to explain about the subjectivity of flawed human perception. (And, of course, I count myself in that as well, as I believe the girls were good enough to have won tonight. I firmly believe they deserved it.)

There were a few upsides, though:

-- La cucaracha - On the lighter side to the evening, the cockroach that crawled out from under the chairs in the courtroom made for a pretty good bout of comic relief. You haven't lived until 20 or so teenaged girls all run squeeling to the other side of the room to escape a bug. (Not just my team either. The other girls may have been worse. Guess they were just louder than us overall tonight.) Just glad the trial was over by that point; I think the kids would have blown a gasket if they had been forced to sit there and ignore the creepy thing.

-- Man in uniform - Tall, attractive sheriff working the courthouse security brightened my mood a bit too. Said he'd be there again next week. (Note to self: catch his name. Not just the year he graduated high school! *g*)

And a sad one:

-- Wednesday night TV - And, of course, tonight's Angel left me twitchy and...well,... honestly uncertain about how I felt. Spoilers )

For those who don't want to read spoilers, a simple gah! Wha? Humph. should suffice.

Well, ranting done. I suppose I'm up for facing more Mock Trial-related headaches tomorrow. Wish me luck.

I posted about this at [livejournal.com profile] buffyfan, but figured since I spent so much time brainstorming, it was worth a cross-posting in my own LJ, too.
Actually, I never used to be into Angel. I blame JM for my current need to watch. Every sexy, not-really-English inch of him.
Damn.

(Regarding Angel 5.9 - "Harm's Way":)

Honestly…
I can’t say that I blame him… )

In other news worth mentioning, it was really refreshing (and fun) to see a Harmony-centric episode. Mercedes did an excellent job! I also enjoyed some of the random tidbits throughout the episode. More fun! )

On the work-related front, I've been putting off going to bed in the hopes that I'll get a phone call at 5:30am announcing the 2-hour-delay I've been kind of counting on. 'Course now is when we probably won't get it.

*still hopeful as it nears 12:30am*
